HAPPY BIRTHDAY PIGERN :)
- I'm sure Darth noticed this but did you guys see how many cross team rivals are playing on Sat. Dec. 2? UCLA vs. USC at the Rose Bowl, LA Lakers Vs. LA Clippers at Staples and LA Kings vs. Anaheim Ducks at Staples. Let's be honest here though ... Anaheim is not LA but I'll give it to them. Ha ha all we need is the Dodgers to play the Angels and we would have had a fun filled day set.

- I am really looking forward to tomorrow's ep of BSG. It is going to be great. There was an article about BSG in Slate and they had a picture of the writer and executive producer of the show Ronald D. Moore. He LOOKS like he would have created BSG. Hee hee.

- I don't even read Pitchfork anymore but this was interesting.

- So I think I can still make my 150 movies goal for the year. I am currently at 128 and need only 22 more movies. I'm pretty close and I think I can do it. I'll try to plow through some this weekend. Yea sorry Hedwig looks like I can't stop watching movies so I guess I will keep getting sick. :(

- Oh and I have like 5 hours of Prison Break to watch, 2 hours of Ugly Betty and a few hours of others. And I have 5 hours of Heroes to watch becuase I taped the marathon. Yup I'm never leaving my house but with it being so cold who needs to.

And now your moment of zen .... THE LAST BLOG OF THE MONTH!!
This is VERY impressive!

Wednesday, November 29

- I was wondering if I got sick a lot. So I counted how many times this year and came up with at least 5 times. That is quite a bit for one year. In fairness, two of them were stomach flu types and that is no surprise given how sensitive my stomach is (remember Freshman yr. Hedwig in the dorms). So my question to Hedwig and FTC is how can I boost my immune system so I won't get sick anymore?

- I am not busy at work but Pigern is swamped. Poor Pigern.

- The cheap pizza place I go to increased their price. I remember it use to be only $4.95 for a pizza, salad and drink but now it is $6.95. Weak!

- Check out the 100 top TV catchphrases. I like how "The truth is out there." - Mulder is on there :)

- At work we have sick days and if they are not used up by the end of the year they get rolled up to some ST disability never to be used again. I'm just saying that because what are the chances I go on ST disability. Anyways, I was looking at the calendar and I think I'm going to get "sick" around Christmas and not use any vacation time :).

I already did my post for the day but I figure I would throw this in for Hedwig and Zephyr. On Nov. 29th at 6 pm on Sci Fi network, they are going to do a Heroes marathon. The first six episodes from this season so far. Hedwig said I should watch for Hiro's cool one-liners. I'm on the fence if I should or not.

To be honest, the only marathon I was bummed I missed was the Sci Fi X-Files one (Nov. 20 to 22 from 8 am to 3 pm) during Thanksgiving week. :( Oh X-Files how I love thee. Mulder and Scully FOREVER!!!

How annoying is this?!!?? Douchebag lead singer Peter Wentz from crappy band Fall Out Boy got to interview the great, the wonderful, the amazing Robert Smith. Life does suck. Oh and the interview is pretty terrible, well not from the Robert Smith side. Pete asks Robert if that was really him in the South Park ep he did. Does this guy not bother to read credits? On the plus side, it was nice to read on Stereogum all the cool comments people put about their favorite Cure songs. Oh yea!

(O) Trip to China/Hong Kong Grade: A

The main purpose of this blog is to satisfy New Wave’s sick need to show off the cooked dog photo we took while in China (ha ha), so here it is:

Moving on, the trip was enjoyable personally because I learned a lot about my family and had the chance to meet family members I had not had met before. I also visited cities in the Canton province, including Guangzhao, whose city symbol is the Five Goats. The story goes that the area was very poor until five goats from the heavens came down to help with the rice paddies, making the city very prosperous to this day.

Also in Guangzhao is the Sun Yat-sen memorial. Named the “Father of Modern China,” Sun Yat-sen led the overthrow of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and became the first leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party.

And here’s a shot of the marriage god statue in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong. I enjoyed the description of him, which says he ties the feet of the man and woman with red string and binds their hearts together. Sounds like torture! Ha ha.

- Blogging everyday is getting OLD. Well only a few more days and it will be all over. :P

- Time changes really mess with your body ... seriously. Yesterday when Pigern and I got home we both thought we would take a 30 min or hour nap. Um yea that turned into like 4 hours. Ha ha we were both SO out of it. I remember at one point Darth called, after 5 tries, to ask if I was still going to go bowling. As you can guess I did not go bowling.

- Does it feel like Christmas is coming to anyone? I see the decorations and lights. Heck I was at the malls in HK and LA and heard the Christmas music and I still do not feel the holiday season. Well lucky for me I don't have to go Christmas shopping because I don't exchange presents with my family (hello I'm Chinese) and most of my friends and I do not do that stuff. Yes more money for me to save. Awesome!

- I'm so ashamed to admit this but ... I have a Netflix movie at home since (drumroll please) Nov. 9th. Yup I have not watched this one movie for almost 3 weeks. I use to bust them out in 1 or 2 days but as of late nope. (Sigh) So bad but I have all this TV I want to watch. Oh well. I should cancel my Netflix and save my money but no.

Back in good old USA. I realized even though I love HK and I love it like how FTC loves Spain ... I know that Los Angeles is my home. But I still love HK tons. I am pretty tired and my time is all messed up. I left HK on Sunday afternoon around 1 pm and I'm home now and it is almost 1 pm on Sunday afternoon. It really should be like Monday for me now. I am pretty tired and smelly and sick. Yucky but it is all good. I did get to watch quite a few movies on the plane. I was too sick to see movies in HK like I wanted though. Oh well.

(M) Efter Brylluppet (After The Wedding). (Susanne Bier, 2006) Grade: B

Thoughts: I quite enjoyed this director’s movie Brodre (Brothers) so I was eager to catch her new film at the AFI (American Film Institute). Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen) is the manager of an orphanage in India, when he is sent to Denmark to get a donation from a rich business man. It turns out the man Jorgen (Rolf Lassgard) is married to his old girlfriend Helena (Sidse Babett Knudsen). In addition, he is the father of their daughter Anna (Stine Fischer Christensen) who is getting married. The acting was strong throughout the movie, although at some points it was a bit over the top/melodramatic.

(M) Eat a Bowl of Tea. (Wayne Wang, 1989) Grade: C+

Thoughts: I watched this film awhile back and never got around to blogging about it. I enjoyed this movie and not because it was good but because of the subject matter. Back in the 1940s, a Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed after World War II, which allowed many male Chinese immigrants to reunite with their families after years of separation. Ben Loy (Russell Wong) is sent back to China to pick up his bride Mei Oi (Cora Miao). The acting was so-so but I liked the all-Asian cast and seeing a young Eric Tsang in the film was interesting.

(M) Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. (Larry Charles, 2006) Grade: B+

Thoughts: Kazakhstanti TV reporter Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen) is sent to the US to report about the “greatest country in the world”. He brings with him his producer Azamat Bagatov (Ken Davitian) and sets off to learn about America. Borat is comical as a character because he is curious to learn and he comes off non-threatening. I think the scariest parts of the film was watching ignorant, racist, bigot Americans tell Borat what they really think. The funny part is now many of those individuals are suing Sacha Baron Cohen claiming they were mislead into thinking what the movie was all about.

(M) The Queen. (Stephen Frears, 2006) Grade: A

Thoughts: The Queen is an intimate behind the scenes look at what was going on with HM Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) and Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) once the news of Princess Diana’s death broke. I immensely enjoyed the movie because it was an interesting look into Britain’s culture and government. Diane’s death was a wake up call to the Royal family about just how important they were to their people as well as just how forgettable they can be. In addition, I liked how they mixed in archival footage of the grieving public and news stories about the death within the film. Helen Mirren did such an amazing job playing HM Queen Elizabeth II. After all, how do you play the Queen of England without making as ass of yourself? The casting for Tony Blair was great as well. The only thing I did not by was the actor who played Prince Charles because he was too good looking. Hee hee.

(M) Ye Yan (The Banquet). (Xiaogang Feng, 2006) Grade: D+

Thoughts: Empress Wan (Zhang Ziyi) is married to Emperor Li (You Ge) after the mysterious death of the first Emperor, who happens to be Emperor Li’s brother. Empress Wan sends word to Prince Wu Luan (Daniel Wu) to come and avenge his father’s death. When the Prince arrives he tries to expose his uncle for the murder of his father while fighting his feelings for Empress Wan and Qing Nu (Xun Zhou). Now if all this sounds a bit familiar it might be because in high school you read Hamlet, which is what this movie is based upon. I had many, many problems with this film. The slow motion frame shooting of the film made it drag, the highly sexual let’s see how many times we can get Zhang Ziyi naked because she is white man’s candy, the over the top acting and dialogue and the list goes on. Zhang Ziyi bugs me because I swear she only has two expressions – pouting and crying. Daniel Wu is good looking but I still stick by my whole he is a terrible actor bit. Ugh. The only saving grace of the whole film was Xun Zhou who I really enjoyed watching her here.

(M) Summertime. (David Lean, 1955) Grade: B

Thoughts: Jane Hudson (Katharine Hepburn) is a spinster on a trip alone to Venice where she falls in love with a married Italian, Renato de Rossi (Rossano Brazzi). The scenery of Venice were BREATHTAKING and amazing. It was a nice escape film with a sweet romance mixed in. As usual, Katharine Hepburn shines here as a strong independent woman who is desperately lonely inside. I have to say it again, they just don't make movies like they use to.

So after tonight all my blogs will be a movie I saw. I'm going to try to get to a computer to blog about the trip and other random stuff but we'll see. :) Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
- I just read Hedwig's blog about the Playstation 3and how all these people are willing to stand in line and blow over $500 bucks for a video game console yet not go to the doctor and complain about how much medicare cost. Just like how there are millions of people starving to death or undernourished yet one of the United States biggest health problems is obesity. It boggles the mind how fat and overloaded with random stuff Americans are. With all the resources we have you think we could spread that out to other countries but NOPE. It is disturbing.

- Have you guys seen the mascots for the Beijing Olympic 2008? I love them; they are so cute. Each of the characters represents the five Olympic rings. When you put the names of all five mascots together you get Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni meaning, "Welcome to Beijing". Awesome.

- Oh and the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympic will be on August 8th, 2008 at 8pm so basically 08/08/08 @ 8pm. Those crazy Chinese people and their love for the number 8.

- Is it cheating that I am having Darth post blogs for me? It is, huh. Well I would blog but I don't have a fancy international blackberry or laptop. Oh well.

- Why is there always traffic on the 10 fwy no matter what time it is? I don't get it.

- Did I mention I am dreading my long, long flight tomorrow. Oh well. It will be worth it in the end but man ... it is going to be rough. I like how in TV when people travel they show you the before and after .. in 30 seconds. Why can't traveling be like that? Ha ha.

(M) Blood and Oil: The Middle East in World War I Grade: B-
Boy, this documentary was dry. I had to watch it for work and fell asleep about halfway through (the beer probably didn’t help). The most striking part of the film was toward the end, at the conclusion of WWI, when Europe divides up the region, motivated by a greed for oil, and how it parallels today’s conflicts. In the end, the narrator concludes that the desire to occupy a region without taking into account its history and culture destabilized the region, leading to fractious factions and violence that continues today.

(A) Ys (Joanna Newsom, 2006) Grade: A-
Pronounced yeesh, this five-song sophomore album is more of the Newsom that people either love (me) or hate (New Wave and most of my friends). Yes, her voice can be high and screechy, but it’s also enchanting. And she has a way with lyrics. Simply loveleee... Newsom and her harp are performing at the El Rey Nov. 30 and shouldn’t be missed. Oh, unless you hate her.
- So night one of KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas is up and night two will be fully announced by the end of the day. Night One: 30 Seconds to Mars, Wolfmother, Saosin, Papa Roach, +44, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Incubus, AFI and the Foo Fighters. Night Two (so far): Gnarls Barkley, Angels and Airwaves, Snow Patrol, She Wants Revenge, The Raconteurs, Evanescence and Panic! At the Disco. What a bunch of crap bands. Well Foo Fighters are okay but that is about it. Check out this link from Wikipedia that list past years performers. In the 90's, it was Oasis, Garbage, RADIOHEAD, Tori Amos, No Doubt, Bad Religion and Smashing Pumpkins. Man those were good times. I'm so tired of these Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, She Wants Revenge types.

- John Legend tomorrow. Him and his baby grand piano are cool.

- I was going to talk about the OJ Simpson thing but Pigern beat me to the punch. I'll just add he is one sick man.

(M) The Good German (Steven Soderbergh, 2006) Grade: B
This murder mystery starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett is Soderbergh’s tribute to filmmakers of the ’40s, particularly Michael Curtiz, whom Soderbergh referenced for such films as Casablanca and Mildred Pierce. Good German itself is entertaining, the black-and-white cinematography is gorgeous and the acting is superb, especially Blanchett, who has had a busy year with Babel and Notes on a Scandal. But this film is really nothing more than pure entertainment, good for what it is but nothing else.
Words can’t describe how little class O.J. Simpson has.

And it seems that Sacha will spend most of his box-office earnings in legal fees. Here’s the latest lawsuit:
British funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen has been threatened with legal action by the Romanian village which stood in for his comic creation Borat’s native Kazakhstan in his hit movie. Gypsy citizens of Glod are outraged that Cohen ridiculed their lifestyle in Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan, which has topped international box offices, and paid them a pittance to allow farm animals into their homes. Local leader Nicolae Staicu will meet with a public ombudsman today to formulate legal action against Cohen and distributor 20th Century Fox. Staicu accused the producers of paying locals just $4 to perform degrading acts, misleading the village into thinking filming was for a documentary and refusing to sign proper filming contracts.

(M) The Decalogue Part 5. Grade: B
I gave up on this 10 part/10 hour series awhile back but am determined to complete it this year. Hopefully I can get through two episodes a week or more. I only have 5 left to go.

This was a good episode to come back on. It was visually the best* one so far and the subject matter had to do with murder. Each episode has to do with one of the Ten Commandments, this was episode 5 so the commandment is 'You Shall Not Murder' (if you use the Catholic bible, it's honor your father and mother for the Jewish and Protestant bible).

In this film one man is trying to become a lawyer (and succeeds), another man is going through life being a trouble-maker and he ends up killing somebody. One year later the two meet in court where the lawyer defends the accused murderer, loses and has to watch the government carry out the capitol punishment sentence by hanging.

This is the most powerful one so far, part one was the most emotional so far and part four was the most twisted or sinister perhaps.

(M) Dandelion (2004, Mark Milgard) Grade: B

Mark Milgard's first feature film is about a boy (Mason) who living in a small town, who is part of a loveless family, and who himself is slowly caring less and less about life. When a new girl (Danny) moves into town, Mason takes interest. All too soon an unexpected event occurs that takes Mason away for a few years. Upon his return he see's his family has deteriorated and the girl he had eyes for has herself been broken by this lonely town. Through Mason he brings love and happiness to those closest to him and those he loves the most but sadly the outside world still brings events out of a single persons control that leads to some tragic events. The cinematography was great.

(M) Venus (Roger Michell, 2006) Grade: B
Peter O’Toole stars in this simple story about an old man who lives out the last moments of his life and unexpectedly falls in love with a young woman. I mistook Venus as a sweet film about friendship between two different generations, but screenwriter Hanif Kureishi said he wanted to spotlight old people (often ignored in Hollywood) as alive and with the same needs, including sexual needs, as those younger. Despite how uncomfortable I found this, I did enjoy the witty dialogue between the older gents.

(M) Babel (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, 2006) Grade: B+
Although I thought this film had its origins in the Biblical story, director Innaritu explained that the idea actually originated from 9/11, which took place four days after he moved to America. The connection to Babel came to him much later, when people compared the Twin Towers to the tower in the story. Babel is mostly about human relationships and how easily we mistrust, miscommunicate and disconnect, heightened today by the media and the fear of terrorism. An overall enjoyable film with an effective but not overly preachy message.
(M) The Philadelphia Story. (George Cukor, 1940) Grade: B+

Thoughts: Philadelphia heiress Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) is about to marry her second husband George Kittredge (John Howard). However a few days before the wedding, her ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), reporter Macaulay Conner (James Stewart) and photographer Elizabeth "Liz" Imbrie (Ruth Hussey) show up. Macaulay and Liz are there to do a story about a high society wedding while Haven is trying to seek revenge against his ex-bride or does he have other motives? The film was witty and clever and had superior acting. They just do not make movies like they use to. I think Katharine Hepburn is an amazing actor with such strength and character.

Last night as I was going to bed I did a quick run through of the 500 some odd channels to see what I wanted to fall asleep too (don't worry I set my sleep timer so the TV didn't run all night). I usually do this and end up on the same thing, espn news. During my flipping through I caught a title that looked too good to be true, so naturally I had to check it out. With that I give to you the magic that is "Kinky Kong" As you can tell by the movie photo, its a bad erotic version of "King Kong" much in the same fashion as other late night hits: "The Bare Wench Project, Playmate of the Apes, Lord of the G-string, and my personal favorite Spiderbabe." Checking in on this for one second it was as cheesy as you could possibly imagine. Kong was a guy in a monkey suit and when holding the girls they just had him holding Barbie Dolls. Yeah it was that good! Anyway if you have cinemax I'm sure you can find it on another time.

(A) Playing With Fire (Kevin Federline, 2006) Grade: D
Curiousity got the better of me, so I streamed this album on Rhapsody at work. Federline is categorized as “novelty hip-hop,” which is why I didn’t give the album an F. Because if one listens to Fire as a comedy album, it’s actually pretty funny. I mean, Federline is “the pancake man”! But does he really have so much flavor that he is like “Tupac juice”? And an extra point for rhyming “paparazzi” with “haters.” I sort of feel sorry for Federline, because he will probably die into obscurity, fathering more illegitimate children along the way, and perhaps hope for an invite into some C-celebrity reality show.

If anyone knows me, they know I'm madly in love with Tony Leung Chiu Wai. He is an amazing actor and a great looking guy. His new movie Confession of Pain come out 3 weeks after I am in Hong Kong. I am pretty disappointed but hey what can you do. :(

(G) The Knife. (El Rey, Nov. 2nd) Grade: A+

Thoughts: Frak this show was frakking AMAZING!!! I can't even go into detail how much I LOVED THIS SHOW and the band. Oh my gosh. Pigern and I arrived around 9 ish in hopes that we would miss part of the opening band. After waiting until five minutes before 10, we looked at each other like what gives. It turned out the opening band was a just a DJ and actually the Knife was on stage. Playing behind a screen and projecting images every which way, The Knife (Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson, a brother and sister team) played their tunes and I started to die. I have not been to a good show in awhile and no the Cure and Radiohead DO NOT count because they are in some high ranked area where they are BEYOND AMAZING. But back to the Knife, they played an hour set with one encore and I almost cried in disbelief that this wonderful band from Sweden was leaving LA and maybe never ever coming back. I had such a hard time letting them go :( Oh the Knife I hope you come back soon. I need your beautiful music :)

An interesting study that was just done about God (or god).

http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=707

Some exerpts:

42 percent of all U.S. adults say they are not "absolutely certain" there is a God, including 15 percent who are "somewhat certain," 11 percent who think there is probably no God and 16 percent who are not sure.
(this of course means that 58% of Americans are absolutely certain that there is a God.)

America's belief in God is apparently declining...
Three years ago, in an identical survey, 79 percent of adults said they believed in God and 66 percent said they were absolutely certain that there is a God. In this new survey, those numbers have declined to 73 percent and 58 percent respectively.

America apparently believes in a distant God...
Less than one-third of all adults (29%) believe that God "controls what happens on Earth" (this includes 57% of Born Again Christians). A plurality (44%) believes that God "observes but does not control what happens on Earth."

Other quick facts...
Only 30% of those who identify themselves as Jewish are certain there is a God
Whites are less likely to believe in god than both African-Americans and Hispanics
The West USA is less likely to believe in God than the East, Midwest, or South
Those with limited college or HS education are more likely to believe than college grads

How cool is that. :) "Nickelodeon will celebrate the happy-go-lucky yellow one with an unprecedented SpongeBob programming event kicking off on Thursday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. with an interactive, 24-hour marathon featuring viewers' top 100 cartoon picks, culminating in an all-new "Best Day Ever" SpongeBob SquarePants special on Friday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the network premiere of the Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie at 8:00 p.m."

Yay for winos!
(G) Voxtrot. (Troubadour, Nov. 1st) Grade: B

Thoughts: I really like this band because I find their music infectious, poppy and fun. The leader singer Ramesh Srivastava is funny because he bounces around the stage and acts goofy. They introduced a few new songs which will be on their full length album coming out sometime next year. I have to say I was not a huge fan of the new tunes. You could tell the band was trying to develop their sound and in the process they dropped the poppy fun music and went for more serious. Overall, the show was just good fun, however I was too tired to get pumped up. I caught myself yawning a few times and not because I was bored. Yup pretty sad. Oh well.

- Back still hurts but it is slowly getting better ... FRAK!!
- I need to watch my movies but no time. There is never any time!! :P Ha ha. Looks like I won't be hitting my 150 movies for the year mark. Oh well. I'm going to aim for 130 now but actually that is pretty low.
- I see myself getting really sick of blogging everyday. What did I get myself into?

So it begins ... one blog every day for November. I am taking a vacation this month so I won't be by a computer but I will try to get someone to blog for me like Darth or Hedwig. Let's get started.

Last night after my class (I got an 82 on my midterm .. darn it), I headed to the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval because there was NO WAY I was going to make it home due to the amount of traffic. It was INSANE!! I met up with my cousin, which took forever becasue of the crowds and we walked around. It was nice just to be out and looking at people's costumes. My personal favorite was a guy dressed up like a Chinese take out box with bamboo sticks as the chopsticks and next to him his friend went as a fortune cookie. How awesome is that.

How was everyone else's Halloween?
