Benjamin Button is such an Academy film. I can see it getting Best Picture. I'm glad Milk got more noms than it did for the Globes.

I hope it goes to The Reader, it won't. I HOPE it DOES NOT go to Slumdog. Please... if there is a God in heaven it will not go to Slumdog Millionaire!!!

Do you not like Slumdog? I really enjoyed that film. Why do you like The Reader so much. I mean it was good but nothing like super amazing. And I don't think Slumdog was all that amazing either BUT it did one of the things movies/films are suppose to do ... entertain.

"A quality flick and you get to see Kate Winslet naked, repeatedly."

I think my love for The Reader comes on a number of different levels. For starters I walked into the movie blind. I hadn't seen a single preview and only went to see it because Kate won Best Actress for it at the Golden Globes. So, what I was exposed to was a movie on morality which I thought was done very well and it went down a road I did not even see coming. I didn't know about the Nazi trial or anything.

The flipside to this is I went into Slumdog with knowing everything about it and a load of hype, therefore leaving nothing to surprise me.

I enjoyed Slumdog and it did entertain but to be a Best Movie of the year, it needs to do more than entertain. Some people praise it for the "uplifting" factor but it didn't pull it off for me. I also thought some of the acting was not too great. The kids were fabulous but the adults were not that great and that reflects on the director.

Another thing with Slumdog is the guy is pining away for girl he never even knew. This "undying" love which isn't even love because he never even knew her. The only credit I give the movie is it is entertaining and it shows two seperate paths two brothers take. But the one brothers path was chosen to be greedy and violent. The other brother seemed to just fumble through life and let "fate" run his life for him.

I think the issue with some movies is expectations. When you see a movie before anything is said you go in with an open mind. Once press and media gets all over it your opinion gets clouded so yes Cup I can see why you thought Slumdog was just alright.

As for the acting, Darth noted the teen adults were not great to me as well but in their defense it was their first acting gig so I'll cut them some slack. I mean not everyone can be as great as Kate Winslet :)

Oh and side note ... garbage like Crash won best picture and Shakesphere in Love bought their vote so anything can happen.

If you see "Gran Torino," then you will know what rough acting is. Boy, were those Hmong actors rough.

I enjoyed "Slumdog" because it was a crossover film, and it's good to see some color in mainstream Hollywood.

On the subject of unconvincing love, yes, I agree that it was a bit of a stretch in "Slumdog," but the same could be said about "The Reader." I mean, when the boy returns to her flat and she bathes him and is naked. It was a bit of a leap there. Ah, suspension of disbelief.

I totally agree that Crash and Shakespeare In Love winning were ridiculous. I feel the same about The Departed.

Also, because the acting was bad in Slumdog also, in my opinion, means it should not win Best Picture because the acting should be good all around for a Best Picture of the Year win.

When I watched The Reader and the seduction came so quickly I was not able to accept that. But... by the end of the film and when I realized how much they had to develop, I just took it that they couldn't spend 15 minutes developing that front end because there was so much to cover on the back end. It doesn't happen that quickly in the book but it still happens really quickly in the book.

Man, remember back in the day when your blog always had these back and forths. So sad that it rarely happens now.

Sorry, but yes... Gran Torino. MAN... R-O-U-G-H!!! I would say very very bad acting.

The Curious Case of Bejanmin Button is a re-hash of Forrest Gump and it doesn't deserve to win Best Picture either. I've enjoyed David Fincher's previous work but Button is SO contrive and overwrought.

And Taraji P. Henson does deserve her nod for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, she really had to project her being and age to play Queenie, a woman twice her age.

Disclaimer: I know and have worked with the editing team of Button @ Rock Paper Scissor, and they deserve the Oscar nod.

And Amy Adams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman from Doubt shouldn't have been nominated, but Viola Davis and Meryl Streep deserve their Oscar nods.

Funny you say that RR ... Pigern said it was very Forest Gump when she saw it. Yea I'm not sure why Doubt is getitng so many nods cause it seems like a very whatever movie. I think it is more effective as a play then a film. Oh and I thought Departed was great and deserved best picture.

Well we'll see on Feb. 22 who takes the big prizes.
