(M) Wordplay (2006) Grade: B+
This documentary about New York Times crossword editor Will Shortz and the annual crossword convention in Stamford, Conn., should entertain those who enjoyed other such films about a group obssessed with one particular activity, sport, etc. I personally think crosswords are fun and found it interesting to know how they are created, the standard rules for each one and about the hardcore puzzle solvers, who can solve a crossword within 10 minutes. Impressive.
(M) The Devil Wears Prada (2006) Grade: B
Since this film is based on a chic lit book, I figured the audience would be predominantly female. But surprisingly, Devil is attracting a very strong gay male following. All of my friend’s gay friends had already seen it more than once. The film was enjoyable. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. It was good for what it was I guess. I am guessing though that its $27 mil. opening weekend was thanks to a lot of fashion-loving men.
(M) l’enfant (2006) Grade: A
The 2005 winner of the Palme D’Or, this French film is simple in its premise but thoroughly enjoyable. Jeremie Renier does a fantastic job as the man who initially has a lot of pride, refuses to get a proper job and becomes so desperate that he sells his own child for money. Watching his decline is heartbreaking, yet Renier is so subtle in his performance that when he finally breaks down at the very end, you almost don’t see it coming. I was left unsettled after watching this. Great film.

Wordplay looks pretty good but I'll just rent it. I'm sure more than just fashion loving men were seeing Devil Wears Prada. I feel like that type of gay man is so typical of LA but is not a fair represenation of all gay men.
