(M) Brokeback Mountain. (Ang Lee, 2005) Grade: A-

Thoughts: I've been waiting to watch this movie for a number of weeks now. First you have an amazing and remarkable director - Ang Lee, second a good short story written by Pulitzer Prize (for The Shipping News) writer E. Anne Proulx and third an uncommon subject matter. Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are two cowboys stuck herding sheep across Brokeback Mountain, Wyoming for the summer to earn some extra cash. Over the span of the months, the two men share a deep fondness and love for each other, more powerful then either one expected. At the end of the summer they split their own seperate ways - Ennis to his future wife Alma (Michelle Williams) and Jack to Texas to be a rodeo cowboy where he meets and marries Lureen (Anne Hathaway). Their tore love for each other continues for over 20 years but the realization of no future starts to settle in with both men as they get older. The ending of the movie is very heart wrenching and touching. I enjoyed the film but in all honestly I'm not sure how well the film will be received by the main stream public. It is disappointing the movie is getting labeled the "gay cowboy movie" because there is so much more to it than that title. Ang Lee does such a great job with shots of nature and directing both actors but I think Heath really shone here.

When I told a friend I saw this film, he replies, "Oh, the gay cowboy movie." That is an unfair categorization because yes, it is about two cowboys who fall in love, but the film's universal theme is love whether gay or straight. And tragedy exists in a love as pure as this soley because of intolerance and sexism. My friend then understood the point of this film and wants to see it. Hurrah!

Seven Golden Globe Nominations (inclduding Best Picture, Director, Actor - Heath Ledger, and Actress - Michelle Williams [not the one from Destiny's Child]).
The most for any film this year.
not bad, eh?

yeah, i realise the golden globes don't mean much but its nice to see the film getting recognition. cos you know the lame-o public just does what its told, so if they see this move get all these nominations, it might make them go see it.
as for myself, i think i'll watch it. i haven't seen a movie in a while, so we shall see. if the opportunity presents itself, i will go.
interestingly, this movie only opened at one theater here in SF, go figure.

Go figure... the foreigners like the 'Gay Cowboy Movie'. Haha. J/K.
Maybe I'll round the guys up, go play some football, have some pizza and beer and go to a late night showing of good old fashion man love.
