(M) Palindromes. (2005, Todd Solondz) Grade: B
In Todd Solondz's world, little, if anything, is distinctly black and white. His latest film, Palindromes, is neither pro-choice or anti-abortion nor is it an out-right attack on Christian fundamentalism. The central theme of the film, as so succinctly stated by the eldest Weiner brother, revolves around the ability to change yourself and the existence of free will. Thus, Aviva, a palindrome herself, harbors the same mindset throughout the film, even when her outward appearance changes. As expected, Solondz achieves his usual uncomfortable sense of humor and introduces several extremely troubled characters. Some imagery is more difficult than Dollhouse fare considering the subject matter but a stronger film overall than Storytelling.
