(M) The Chatterley Affair Grade: B
Written by Andrew Davies (Tipping the Velvet), this film focuses on the real-life obscenity trial for D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, which serves as the backdrop for a fictional love affair between two of the jurors. Frankly, anyone who hasn’t read Lady Chatterley will have little interest in this film. Otherwise, it’s a so-so movie, but I didn’t care much for the main characters. I guess having a film on just the trial would have been a bore.

(M) The Painted Veil Grade: A
This film adaptation of the Somerset Maugham book is fantastic. Everyone is excellent here, from Ed Norton to Naomi Watts, and there’s interesting subplot about British imperialism on China. Great, great film.
