(M) Little Children (Todd Field, 2006) Grade: C+
I honestly think I expected too much from this film based on the strength of Field’s debut In the Bedroom. Plus, it’s Field adapting Tom Perrotta’s book, and I did enjoy Election. But I found this story of infidelity and suburbia gone paranoid a bit underwhelming. My favorite bit was the parallel between the characters and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. It’s self versus society, but perhaps I’ve become too cynical, because when society wins out in the end, I just shrugged and thought, “predictable.”
