(O) Les Miserables. (Pantages, June 11) Grade: A-
Thoughts: I love musicals. With that said Les Miserables is not a musical but more an opera, a wonderfully depressing opera. Set in France during revolutionary times, Jean Valjean is an ex-convict trying to make a new life for himself after 19 years in prison. After several years, he becomes the mayor of a small town and helps a prostitute Fauntine from going to jail. He ends up taking care of Fauntine’s daughter, Cosette after her death. The entire play/musical is beautiful and depressing at the same time. The songs that stood out for me were I Dreamed A Dream, Who Am I? and One Day More!, although Master of the House is fun. I can’t say this is my favorite musical but it was extremely enjoyable. The only complaint I could give is the production runs a bit long but aside from that I would highly recommend this musical to view.
