(A) Sound of White. (Missy Higgins) Grade: B+
Although my current affinity for piano-based music might be the result of my piano lessons, Missy Higgins' album is an impressive debut for this Australian 21-year-old (don't you feel like an underachiever now?). Sound of White is pop music for those who don't think they like pop music. Think more Rachel Yamagata (though not as raspy) and less Vanessa Carlton. Higgins uses basic themes of love, longing and sadness to achieve a simplicity that is surprisingly rich. Other instruments back her piano melodies, but the real star is simply her and the twinkling keys.
